The people side of Transformation

A meeting I had yesterday reminded me of my deep passion for people, and just how important the human side of Transformation is to success. Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of following established frameworks to the letter - I prefer to pull from different approaches and customize for the current situation. However, as I went back to read over some of my PROSCI materials, I was reminded of the simplicity and accuracy of the Prosci Change Triangle (PCT) Model - outlined in my own words below.

Essentially, under the umbrella of what I like to call Project & Change Delivery, there are 3 components:

  • Overall leadership & sponsorship - essential to any change or transformation program is the right governance model and leadership mindset

  • The technical project management piece - making sure you have top notch project management resources to deliver the solution

  • A change management approach - the component that focuses solely on ensuring those impacted are bought-in and can adopt the solution.

If you've every truly implemented proper change management alongside traditional project management, you know how powerful that can be. The downsides to not getting the people side right include:

It's widely understood that approximately 70% of change/transformation projects fail. This is largely due to employee resistance or lack of management support. When you think about how much is invested in any Business Transformation project - many times in the multi-million-dollar range - there's a lot to lose by not getting it right!

No doubt, people can be difficult, unpredictable and emotional - and because of that, many leaders will gravitate towards the technical side of things - but for someone like me, who loves to engage with employees, and to understand their attitudes and behaviors, the rewards of seeing people embrace change and thrive within it, are incredible!

Hope you enjoyed reading,
